Mrs. Shirky

Welcome to Second Grade!!  I am Mrs. Shirky and I am so excited to teach Second Grade!! I have been teaching Second Grade for 8 years now, three years in Sedalia District and this is my fifth year at Otterville! I was born and raised in Sedalia and graduated from Smith Cotton in 2007. I went to University of Central Missouri (UCM) and graduated with a Bachelor's in Arts in Early Childhood and Elementary in 2012.  I am currently working on my Masters of Arts in Reading through Grand Canyon University.

I love Second Grade because I feel like this is the year that the students become very independent.  It is exciting to watch them start from the beginning and feel that confidence to grow and explore!  We have so much fun learning about many different stories and comprehension/reading strategies, new math skills like regrouping with addition and subtraction, and science skills like learning about life cycles of chicks, frogs, and butterflies.  There are so many new and fascinating things to learn in Second Grade!

I am married to Shad Shirky and we live in Clifton City.  We love to spend time with our dogs, Hoss and Molly.  I also enjoy helping Shad with any farm chores, swimming, reading, and spending time with my family and friends!  I love animals and I am often talking about all of our pets!  We have our two dogs (you will get tired of hearing about them!!), cows, chickens, and Shad has pig barns so I love to go see them while they are tiny piggies!!

Please always feel free to contact me with any questions and/or comments any time!!  I can respond to email most often  or call the school and leave me a message during the day (660) 366 4391.
