    Rules and Policies

    Program Description

    Agricultural Education programs across the nation are, by design, made up of three separate yet interwoven parts.  These parts are:  (1) Agricultural Education class; (2) FFA; and (3) Supervised Agricultural Experience Program (SAE).  When a student enrolls in the Agricultural Education class, he or she is enrolling in all three segments of the program and is to meet the standards of each. 

     

    Definition of Agricultural Education

    Educational program involving classroom instruction and student responses in the basic study of animal science, plant science, leadership, agribusiness management, agricultural management, horticulture, agricultural mechanics, etc. 

     

    Extended Classroom and/or Laboratory Activities

     

    Due to the potentially dangerous, explosive, and life threatening nature of most Laboratory (shop) equipment, it is of the up-most importance that all students follow all instructions, expectations, and can be trusted to handle the equipment.  ABSOLUTELY NO CLASS in the Otterville R-VI Agricultural Education Department will be permitted to enter into such activities unless they have proven to the instructor that the entire class can and will follow all instructions, expectations, and can be trusted.  Then and only then will, the students be permitted to enter into such activities as Welding, Oxy-acetylene Cutting or any other activity in the Laboratory (shop). 

     

    Definition of FFA

    The National FFA Organization is a Federally Chartered Organization of students enrolled in agricultural education programs designed to provide students with Premier Leadership, Personal Growth and Career Success.  Additionally, FFA provides contests, scholarships, and award programs for students to participate in to display their skills in areas of agricultural education.  In 1950, Congress passed Public Law 740 which provided the National FFA Organization with a Federal Charter.  This charter made the FFA an “intra-curricular” part of the Agriculture Education Program.  Intra-curricular means that some lessons and activities being taught in the classroom will be focused on the National FFA Organization.

     

    Definition of Supervised Agricultural Experience Program

    In the basic sense, SAE is that aspect of the total agricultural education program, which includes entrepreneurial and placement experiences, based on the student’s career objectives which are conducted outside of the classroom.  In addition, it is that component of the program, as a result of classroom instruction, from which practical application is carried out by the student under the supervision of the Agricultural Education Instructor.

    Program Requirements

    The requirements set forth by this department are designed to promote the most beneficial experience possible for all students in the program.  Failure to meet these requirements can result in the dismissal of the student from the program. 

    FFA

    1. All members must pay annual dues.
    2. All members are expected to maintain a “C” average if they wish to participate above the local level.
    3. Members are expected to participate in FFA activities.
    4. Members are to follow the FFA Code of Ethics.
    5. FFA does NOT count as part of the class grade BUT parts of FFA and class overlap.
    6. Participation in FFA activities will determine FFA awards to be given at the end of the year, and will be taken into consideration in deciding who will attend some FFA trips (such as National Convention).
    1. Although students are not required to have a FFA jacket they are strongly encouraged to purchase a new or used one, to be worn to FFA activities and contests.

     Supervised Agricultural Experience Program (SAE)

     

    1. Students are expected to have at least one SAEP.
    2. Students are to be responsible of the management, accounting and development of the SAEP.
    3. Instructor is to supervise the SAEP.
    4. Each student will be given a record book to keep accurate and up-to-date records on their projects.

     Agricultural Education Classroom Expectations

     

    In order to maintain a pleasant learning atmosphere, the following guidelines will be followed by each student: 

    1. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings.
    2. Be prepared with all appropriate materials in class (paper, pencil, project, etc.)
    3. Follow directions the first time they were given.
    4. Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity.
    5. Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in the Otterville R-VI Schools handbook.

    *NO WHINING ZONE*

     Agricultural Education Laboratory Procedures

     

    1. All students enrolled in Agricultural Science I, Agricultural Science II, and Agricultural Construction are responsible for these pieces of equipment in which they are issued by the agriculture teacher. These pieces of equipment include safety glasses and welding gloves.
    1. All students must pass safety test before working in the shop
    2. Any student with hair length below the collar will be required to wear a hair net, rubber bands, pony tail holder, etc. to avoid catching it in the shop equipment.
    3. Any student caught stealing, destroying or tampering with the shop equipment or other student's projects will be removed from the class and charged for damages.
    4. Safety is the first concern in shop. Any student that becomes a safety hazard will be removed immediately.
    5. Shop projects will be graded on quality of work, ability of following directions, proper use of equipment and timeliness.
    6. All students are required to have proper protective clothing before working in the shop. It is suggested that you have and keep in the locker in shop a pair of all cotton coveralls or long sleeve cotton shirt, steel toed boots and a cap.   These items can be left in the shop lockers.
    7. Students must bring their own materials for certain projects. Student can either buy it themselves and bring it or give money to instructor and they will deliver projects to you. If materials are not brought or paid for a zero will be given for that assignment.
    8. At NO TIME are student allowed to work in shop in the absence of an instructor.
    9. Any projects other than your own or your parents must have a statement signed the owner that they will pay all expenses and not hold the school or instructors financially liable for any mistakes or damage that might occur.

     Agriculture Education Laboratory Rules

    1. Wear safety glasses.
    2. Return tools to the correct place.
    3. No horseplay.
    4. Follow safety procedures at all times.
    5. Complete all assigned tasks.
    6. Instructor=boss.

    The Agricultural Education Grading Procedures

    Worksheets/Quizzes/Tests

    These will be given on a regular basis and includes the FFA Record Book. Each student will be given a record book to keep accurate and up-to-date records on their SAE projects.  The record book will be graded each month.  Each Record Book Grading sheet should be kept at the front of the Record Book.  Grades received for Record Books will be calculated into the Classroom Grade.  Any damage or lost record books are to be paid for by the student. 

     Projects

    Many projects will be assigned and expected to be completed either in class or as homework.

     Bell Ringers

    At the beginning of each class period the students will write at least one sentence that answers a question on the board each day in a notebook that will be provided.

     FFA Activities

    The Professional Development Assignment will be given out each semester and will be worth 100 points.   Different activities count for different things and it is important to complete the assignment.

    Miscellaneous Policies

    1. No textbooks will be issued to the students; they will be kept in the classroom to be available when needed.
    2. Throughout the year student teachers and substitute teachers will be teaching certain classes.  Students are expected to follow the same rules as described and show respect and courtesy to them at all times.
    3. Your instructor is willing to help you with any problems concerning school and
    4. Ag. classes, feel free to call upon them when needed. Each student will be assigned a computer with a number. It is your responsibility to report any problems with your computer. When we are using computers no food or drinks will be allowed. At the end of class, all computers must be put back into the proper slot and plugged in. When using computers, you are not allowed to play games or be on social media. If you are caught your rights to the computers will be revoked. If you inflict willful damage upon the computers you will be sent to the office

    Professional Development Assignment:

    It is important to participate in different activities within the community throughout your life.   Whether it be Relay For Life, church events or the Otterville Street Fair it is important to see the value of being a part of something and helping out.   The Professional Development Assignment is designed for you to help see this need.   Each semester the student will be given a certain amount of points for participating in certain FFA activities.   FFA is an essential part of the agriculture classroom and ALL Agriculture Education students need to be involved.   Any extra participation beyond the require 150 points will be rewarded with bonus points to the student.
