Welcome all of you to a new and exciting school year!
I started teaching at Otterville during the 2012-2013 school year, and I am so excited to be your child’s teacher! Here is a bit of information about me. I graduated from University of Central Missouri in December 2005 with a Bachelors in Education, with an emphasis in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. In May 2012, I completed my Master’s degree in Reading Education through the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. In the past I taught fifth grade for three years at another district in the area and for one year I was a teacher's aide and elementary computer skills teacher. For my 1st 7 years in Otterville I was the First Grade Teacher and now I teach Kindergarten. I am married to my husband Scott and we live outside of Smithton. We have two children, a daughter (Kayla) and a son (Jarrett) I enjoy spending time with my children, camping, reading, bicycling, and scrapbooking.
As your child’s teacher, I have three goals that I think will help make everything fall into place for a successful school year.
1. I will provide a positive environment for your child to learn in. He or she is much more likely to be successful in a pleasant and safe environment where it is O.K. to take a chance or even learn from a mistake.
2. I will encourage independent thinking. Children learn best by doing. Sometimes how you arrive at the answer is more education than the answer itself.
3. I will help promote responsibility and self respect in every student and pride in our school as a whole.
The educational focus of this year will be developing phonemic awareness and phonics skills to assist with learning to read. We will be beginning the start of writing (first letters and then sentence creation) and learning basic skills in mathematics. We will also have plenty of science and social studies incorporated into our learning from our reading series and through activities. Giving each and every student a good solid background in each of these areas is the ultimate goal. To do this, I want to stress again how important attendance is at this grade level. We are using several programs that require us not to waste a single moment. Please see the attendance policy in the school handbook.
Your child will have a purple folder that they will bring home nightly. It is vital that it is returned to school daily. It will serve a communication tool. The front pocket is where any important information or forms that need a signature will be. The back pocket will be all papers that you can keep at home. All school papers, grade cards, notes, etc. will be sent home in the purple folder. You will also find a reading log (in October). This will stay in the folder in the plastic sleeves. I will switch them out monthly and keep them. I will put in the new reading log every month. I will also use Class Dojo to showcase things that we do in the classroom such a projects or learning activities. I will do this through the use of the class story feature through pictures and videos. An invite will be sent to all families at the beginning of the year.
If you ever have a question or concerns as we go through the year, please let me know. My planning/conference time is for 57 minutes and alternates based on our special classes schedule usually from 12:05- 1:02. You may also call the school (660) 366-4621 and leave a message for me and I will return your call during my planning time. I check my email at various times though out the day, so it is another good way to get a hold of me. My email address is email@example.com I am looking forward to a great year of learning with the students!
