Mrs. Michelle Davis

Welcome all of you to a new and exciting school year!

This is my 7th year at Otterville, and I am so excited to be your child’s teacher! Here is a bit of information about me. I graduated from University of Central Missouri in December 2005 with a Bachelors in Education, with an emphasis in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. In May 2012, I completed my Master’s degree in Reading Education through the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. In the past I taught fifth grade for three years at another district in the area and for one year I was a teacher's aide and elementary computer skills teacher . I have been married to my husband Scott for 20 years and we live outside of Smithton. We have two children, a daughter (Kayla, 20 years old, college sophomore at SFCC) and a son (Jarrett, 14 years old, 9th grader) and our lovable dogs Tinker, Sadie and Nakita. When not at school, I enjoy spending with my children, camping, reading, bicycling, and scrapbooking.

As your child’s teacher, I have three goals that I think will help make everything fall into place for a successful school year.

   1.  I will provide a positive environment for your child to learn in. He or she is much more likely to be         successful in a pleasant and safe environment where it is O.K. to take a chance or even learn from a         mistake.

  1. I will encourage independent thinking. Children learn best by doing. Sometimes how you arrive at the answer is much more educational than the answer itself.
  1. I will help promote responsibility and self-respect in every student and pride in our school as a whole.

The educational focus of this year will be reading, writing and mathematics. We will also have plenty of science and social studies and incorporated into our learning from our reading series and through activities. Giving each and every student a good solid background in each of these areas is the ultimate goal. To do this, I want to stress again how important attendance is at this grade level. We are using several programs that require us not to waste a single moment. Please see the attendance policy in the  school handbook.

As listed in the First Grade Handbook, the purple folder is our means of communication. It is important that your child bring this folder to school everyday. The front pocket is where your child will put their homework ( if they have any) and the back pocket will be all papers that you can keep at home. All school papers, grade cards, notes, etc. will be sent home in the purple folder. You will also find a reading log (in October, more than likely). This will stay in the folder in the plastic sleeves. I will switch them out monthly and keep them. I will put in the new reading log every month. If your child has homework they will put it in  the front pocket of the folder. Generally your child will NOT have homework, unless they have not completed something during the day.

As a part of our reading series we will have weekly sight words and spelling words. Spending a few minutes a night working with these words will really help students out with knowing how to read their sight words and being successful on their spelling tests on Friday. I also mointor student progress on sight words multiple times during each quarter of our school year.

I will send home a weekly newsletter every Friday in the purple folder to keep you updated with what is going on in our classroom. If you ever have a question or concerns as we go through the year, please let me know. My planning/conference time is for 45 minutes and alternates based on our special classes schedule usually from 12:25-1:10 or 1:15-2:00. My plan time is dependent on our scheduled special for the day. You may also call the school (660) 366-4621 and leave a message for me and I will return your call during my planning time. I check my email at various times though out the day, so it is another good way to get a hold of me. My email address is   You are welcome to visit our classroom at anytime throughout the year. I’d love to have you come in and see what we are up to! I’m looking forward to a great year!!
